Can Tho is 169km from Ho Chi Minh City and is the biggest city in the Mekong Delta. It is located on the south bank of the Hậu River, the bigger branch of the Mekong River.
floating market
Can Tho City is famous for its floating markets, where people buy and sell things on the river, additionally, thes port of Ninh Kieu and the bird garden. The city offers a wide range of tropical fruits such as pomelo, longan, jackfruit, mango and durian.
Can Tho has very seasonal weather which is warm all year round, but you need to plan when to go if rain or excessive heat bothers you. It is regularly dry December to April and wet from May to November, with annual average temperature of 27°C / 81°F. The latter part of the dry season (March and April) tends to get extremly hot, when it would probably be better to head for the Central Highlands area.
During the monsoon months, it rarely rains for weeks on end. It is best to avoid June, July and August, though, when it is more humid and rainy than any other time. This is also flood season, although southern Vietnam never gets the powerful typhoons that the north seems to receive.

It is amazing to take a boat trip along the riverbanks on fine weather days. On the east bank of Hau River is Ninh Kieu Wharf, which is well known for its beautiful site. Not too far from the wharf is a floating restaurant connected to the bank by a bridge. Visitors travel along the waterway to the floating restaurant to taste eel dishes, a specialty of the region.
